WOW !!! The only way to describe this year’s event. Not only did we have a strong neighborhood turnout but several groups from outside our neighborhood were assigned to our projects. Everyone involved did an outstanding job and we dare anyone to find a stray piece of debris on any street from A-G. Morrison Park had about 20 people pruning, weeding, raking, shoveling and laying mulch to great effect. A special thanks to those groups that volunteered from outside our neighborhood – the guys from Erdman Anthony at the Culver Road Armory and the team from Hillside Chlildren’s Center. Peyton from Hillside was a star and showed his muscle shoveling and laying down mulch. Luckily we worked quickly enough so that the last shovelful of mulch was being spread as the raindrops started to fall. As part of the citywide event, we handed out about 30 vouchers to the volunteers for the afternoon Red Wings Game. ABC Streets NA Board Members Jim Hondorf and Kevin Hamblin led the charge this year and thanks go out to them for their hard work.
Photos of your neighbors working hard can be found HERE.
One more step to finish in Morrison Park – plant annuals and mulch in the stone garden under the sign on Sunday, May 18th at 9 AM. Join us if you can and bring a spade/work gloves.
On Thursday, April 17th the ABC Streets Neighborhood Association held it’s Spring General Membership Meeting. The theme was Healthy Living. Because of the overwhelming interest in our speakers we thought that we would share a recap of the meeting for those that could not attend. We want to thank our local businesses who donated the healthy refreshments – Real Life Food & Fitness, F. Olivers and East Avenue Wegmans. Also our sincere thanks to our speakers — Scott MacRae from the Rochester Cycling Alliance, Ellen Brenner from Fleet Feet Sports and David Brickman from the Body Mind Float Center. Please download this PDF for a full recap of the evening.

Saturday, April 12 brought us a magnificent Spring day filled with warmth and sunshine. It also brought us the sound of the neighborhood children shrieking with delight as they
searched the Hasman’s backyard to find all of the hidden Easter eggs. As the adults enjoyed chocolates, cookies and cold drinks we got a chance to catch up after a long Winter hibernation. The kids continued their fun into the afternoon on the Hasman’s backyard playset and went home with their Easter baskets filled with goodies. Additional pictures of the event can be found HERE. Warm thanks to the Hasman family for hosting this event.
Tonight at 10pm on HGTV our Neighborhood president Susan Glenz will be showcased on House Hunters. Susan is a realtor for Keller Williams and over the last year worked with a couple, who were renting in the ABC Streets, find a home for their growing family. Seeing the energy and skill that Susan puts into her career as a realtor this is a deserving honor. If you see here in the neighborhood say hi and congrats.
Tune in tonight, February 26th, 2014 at 10pm.
On Saturday, February 8th the ABC Streets Neighborhood Association held its own Olympic challenge – our annual Chili Cook-off. Six chefs vied for the honor of Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals. Two dozen spectators tasted and compared the options – from vegetarian to hearty meat variations. Our esteemed judging panel – Elaine Spaull, Barb Kraus and Susan Glenz –handed down the final decision and the prizes were awarded:
- Gold – Susan Hondorf – Harvard Street – Hondorf Secret Family Recipe
- Silver – Tom Pastecki – Calumet Street – Beefy Beer Chili
- Bronze – Nancy Sears – Calumet Street – Turkey Chili with Walnuts
Several excellent homemade corn bread options and yummy desserts were available as an accompaniment to the chili. Thanks to our generous hosts, Dave and Irene, who made sure the chili’s stayed hot and the assortment of beverages stayed cold and also supplied the winner’s prizes. To see some photos click HERE.
The swirling snow softly fell on the party-goers for the annual ABC Streets Holiday Celebration. Suspended icicles twinkling with color, beckoned all from behind a veil of sparkling snowflakes. The warm and inviting home of Nancy & Brian Sears greeted the revelers dressed in full holiday regalia. Winter greenery adorned the fireplace mantel and lights danced on the decorated glass ornaments and dangling faceted crystals. A vintage toy train traveled around the decorated Christmas tree and completed the holiday ensemble.
Festive finger foods, dreamy deserts and bubbly beverages kept the revelers happy in catch-up conversation.
As the celebration concluded, a winter wonderland lay waiting. As all walked out of sight, the winter winds whispered “Happy Holidays to all and to all a good night.” Submitted by: Barb Kraus

The weather cooperated on Saturday with bright sunny skies and warm temps as a troop of neighbors, armed with rakes and trimmers, got together to put Morrison Park “to bed” for the Winter. The hostas were cropped and the leaves were raked and some new tulip bulbs were planted so that we can capture the first hints of Spring. Thanks to everyone from the neighborhood who participated and thanks also to Nancy Johns Price and her city team that lent us the gear and made sure the street got cleaned up when we were done.
The fall colors are brilliant today in our wonderful neighborhood!
Ghouls and goblins swooped in Saturday last to Castle Alexander for their annual parade through the town. The leaves were swirling and the winds carried the witches, fairies, dragons, princesses, super heroes and their guardians down the cobbled street toward the foggy Kraus family cemetery where their images were captured for all eternity. The howling hound called them to Herr Hasman’s cozy Inn for a feast of mulled cider, mummified remains, newt’s eyes, and sweet black spiders. View their images, if you dare……. . Photos HERE
