Park Avenue Historic District

Being in the Park Avenue Historic District Means Owner-Occupants Are Eligible for Tax Credits!

This sign in Morrison Park celebrates our neighborhood being part of the officially designated Park Avenue Historic District. The district was placed on the National Register of Historic Districts in February 2020.

As a result, owner occupants in our neighborhood are eligible to apply for the NYS Homeownership Rehabilitation Tax Credit Program. Administered by the NY State Historic Preservation Office, this program provides a credit off your NYS income tax that can help offset repairs and upgrades to your home.

Click on the Tax Credits tab above to find out about getting a credit off your NYS income tax, worth 20% of qualifying repair and rehab expenses, up to a credit value of $50,000 per year. The value of the credit can be applied to your state tax liability and reduce the amount you owe.

Multi-year Effort

The effort to designate the historic district began in 2016 when our association leaders started talks with the Landmark Society of Western NY. It took more than three years and approximately $55,000 to fund and complete the extensive work that went into the National Register nomination and approval process. The Landmark Society spearheaded the overall effort, which grew to encompass other associations.

Many neighborhood leaders, businesses, residents, sponsors, volunteers, and grant funders helped the historic district become reality. A gift of $15,000 toward the effort was awarded directly to the ABC Neighborhood Association by the Community Foundation, and additional funds were provided by Preserve New York, a signature grant program of the NYS Council on the Arts and the Preservation League of NYS. Special support also came from the South East Area Coalition and the Historic District Ad-Hoc Committee, whose members included Thomas Pastecki, ABC Streets Neighborhood Association; Stephanie Frontz, Park Avenue Revitalization Committee; Sandra Goldman, Barrington Street Neighborhood Association; and Vic Vinkey, Park Meigs Neighborhood Association.
